Iron Stars - aila

Aila wakes just after sunset in her small chamber, stiff from the flat hard bed. Fresh flowers lie on your desk, one of the many slaves must have replaced the old ones during the day. News of a successful raid on a neighboring planet headlines the news, a partially damaged spike drive, lots of various salvaged tech, and a couple slaves were procured and a trip back is already being planned. A few of your brethren are highlighted as part of the raiding crew. (edited)

“Always doing whatever they can for the new technologies...” Aila grumbles as she works her way out of bed. She gathers her gear in a bag hanging to her side, and dons the regular gear of the order’s mystics, the small blade pair hilts parallel along her back. She looks out the window wistfully at the surrounding landscape after running her hands through the flowers, straightening them.

The view out is beautiful, the pearlescent sands glistening under the bright moonlight. You can see most of the temple grounds from here, low flat buildings surround the large septagonal pyramid where your rooms are. Your seniority allows you a room near the top, though you suspect it's more to get you out of the way than out of respect.

Aila enjoys the view for a while, before she gets stir crazy and reluctantly makes her way out of the room, walking around the floor. Before heading down and getting to work.

As you exit your room, a strangely well groomed slave almost bumps into you carrying some dirty dishes out from the room across yours.

After talking to the slave for a bit, she goes into the kitchen to make herself a cup of tea, then sips it as she rides down to the lower floors to see what, if anything, is needed of her. She’ll want to check out the two spike capable ships as well, but can’t make a trip solely for that. It’ll have to wait.

You meander about the temple for a while, seeing if anyone needs help. You can't help but feel obsolete as most of this generation's initiates focus solely on combat and barely touch on the mystic arts. Eventually one of the younger initiates approaches you wearing a jade robe rather than the training leathers most use. It's a bit too long for him and the sleeves droop over his hands. He bows deeply, his voice respectful despite an unfortunate lisp "Excuse me elder, I was told to come to you to learn the finer points of meditation."

It brings a smile to her face seeing one of the young ones so interested. She bows lightly in response. “Something I don’t hear often, unfortunately. I’m glad you found me. I don’t think I’ve seen you around before. What can I call you, and why to you seek to better your meditation?”

"Ben Owens. I only recently found out I was blessed by the Almighty Xerkis so they brought me here for training. Thing is, I'm kind of terrible at fighting. I can't even use one blade, let alone two! I figured I'd need an edge to stay competitive if I wanna make it into the sunguard, so I'd like to learn some of that old mystic stuff but they said I'm not ready and I gave to learn how to be quiet and listen and have a still mind and all this other stuff so they said I should see one of the elders cause they're too busy fighting to teach me!"

(Would there be training rooms to use in the complex?)

“Sadly, I’m not surprised Ben Owens. Drawing power from within is something of a lost art here. I’m glad you found me. Follow me” She leads him towards one of the empty training rooms. Most of the nicer ones are taken, but that’s of little consequence. She finds a simple zen one, often unused, and heads in. She sits cross-legged in the floor and motions for him to do the same.

“Fortunate as you are to feel blessed by Almighty Xerkis, forget that for now. Meditation is about looking inward and drawing power from there.”

He follows your instructions and sits likewise. "Looking inward, ok. Um, how do I do that?"

“Well, you want to improve your combat abilities, so lets start simple. Focus on your breathing, your heartbeat, silly as it sounds. Try to be aware of your body and where every bit of it is.” (edited)

"Alright I'll try." He tries to sit still, fidgeting every so often. His face is scrunched up in concentration as he tries to focus on his body. After a minute he opens one eye and sees you watching him. "How do I know if I'm doing it right?"

“You don’t. And chances are, you’re not. But if you were to pick up a guitar for the first time and pluck at the strings, you’re still playing a song, only badly. Over time, you’ll get better, and eventually, you’ll figure out what the song is as you learn more about the instrument and about yourself” (edited)

"Huh, I guess that makes sense. I can see how that works with the fighting too with all those boring drills. Thanks for the wisdom, elder. Mind if I sit here and practice some more with you?"

“Of course not. I could use some meditation time myself. There are plenty of things I’ve still yet to learn. Though, if you’ll excuse me a moment, I’ll return shortly.” Aila disappears out the door and quickly returns to the kitchen. She makes another cup of tea for herself, and one for Ben, before returning. “Here. This might make it easier. It’s a very special brew and should help you release your great inner powers. One could even say it’s...” she takes a sip and looks at him intensely, “magic.” (edited)

His eyes widen and he takes the tea carefully, blowing on it before taking a cautious sip. "Mmm, that's good. You know, I think I feel it now!" He drinks a bit more, "It really must be magic!"

“Wonderful. Sure works for me.” She gives him a smug grin and chuckles. She lifts her own cup and sips the perfectly normal chamomile tea with a sugar cube. “Now, back to meditation.” Aila reassumes her seat on the floor and sits with Ben while he does the same, sipping the tea every so often.

Ben sits with you, still fidgeting a bit but your words and the tea seemed to have helped him calm down and focus. Both of you complete your meditation and he looks up at you and smiles. "So when can I move things with my mind?"

She puts his hand on her shoulder and laughs. “Hah, when you spend hours upon hours practicing it with the help of someone who’s not me because I can’t do that. Though with your dedication, who can say what you’ll do”

He grins up at you before bowing respectfully, "Thank you elder, you've been a big help! I'll keep working really hard so I can be even stronger than you!" He skips away joyfully, carefree as only a child can be.

It makes her a little melancholy, knowing he would tribe far better outside this place. Once he’s left, she stands up and heads for the hanger, hoping to get a look at the spike ships that were brought in. (edited)

The ships with spike are all in the main city rather than the temple, here there's a small shuttle equipped for a trip to one of the many moons of Etxaurren. The main city is a relatively quick subway ride away though.

She takes the subway into the city, happy to get out, even if just for a while.

Conveniently, the subway has a stop underneath the main hangar and you can access it without going outside. A few soldiers guard the entrances but your rank allows you through without question. Inside you find three ships currently outfitted with spike-2 drives, two shuttles and a free merchant. The shuttles are outfitted to transport people and cargo while the merchant seems to be more military focused. In the back you see another larger ship under construction.

Here with a purpose, she only takes a moment to take it in. She shakes her head. If I could escape without having to go to space, I would, she thinks to herself. As Aila checks out the ships, she pays close attention to what kind of security surrounds them. She tries to figure out if any additional measures beyond getting to one and flying it would be needed to get it out. She’s more interested in the free merchant than either of the shuttles, but investigated all three.

There seem to be two guards at each of the shuttles. The free merchant only has one currently, but from his extravagantly ornate armor you'd know that he's one of the elite sunguard, not generally used for normal guard duty. As you continue to watch, you see one of the Nexi exit the merchant talking to a pilot. Both Nexi and sunguard outrank you, offending them would be unwise though at least they wouldnt be able to kill you without consequence unlike lesser castes.

Keeping an eye on the guards, she slowly starts walking towards the ship being constructed and the far side of the hanger. As she nears the free merchant ship (I imagine it like she’s seen all this from one end and the partially built one is on the far end), she slows more, trying to hear what the Nexi and pilot are saying. She uses her makeshift telescoping pole staff as she walks, hoping to disguise her slow walk.

The sunguard eyes you briefly but dismisses you as a threat. It's hard to hear specifics without getting close enough to be obvious but you get the gist that the Nexi is wanting to take the merchant somewhere. The pilot is acting appropriately deferential, but there do seem to be some official steps to go through for permission to use one of the ships.

Not learning anything of particular interest to her, she continues to the half-constructed ship being built. She stands and watches as people work. In addition to trying to figure out what it is to begin with, she also notes whether the workers are slaves or not.

It's still in its early stages of construction, it's hard to tell what exactly it's going to be. They seem to be using a lot of pieces from smaller ships to sort of patchwork together a larger one. You're no expert on ship building, but it doesn't seem like the ones building it are either.

(Ok, so it’s two idea kind of floating around up here. The first is to block their non-ships (possible by preventing their hanger door from opening), take out the two lesser guards and steal a shuttle with whoever we can get on it, then take off. I don’t think they’d destroy one of their few spike ships, so we should be homefree then. If they come after us in the free merchant, we put down, let them on, then break over for it and steal that one. Bait and switch style. Other option is to get whoever I can onto the big ship raid mission and try to set up a trap or take over the ship at some point there. Little simple but depends more on the world cooperating.)

(The free merchant is going on a smaller scale raid to Brizeno, fewer people but with the elite guards if you wanted to try to join. They don't have any skilled ship builders so the larger one won't be done for a while. The non-spike ships are in separate hangars at different locations like the shuttle at the temple, so depending on how you do it their response time may be too slow to matter. Otherwise either of those is worth a shot)

(Ok got it, thanks. Imma go see what strings I can pull before anything else) Having seen enough for now, Aila heads back to the temple to inquire about the ship raid mission she’s heard about. It’s not the plan that’s been on her mind, but it could be a good route to go, depending on what pull she has in it.

The target seems to be an old psychic academy. Intel from a captured slave suggested great treasures there but dangerous feral psychics so they're searching for elite soldiers and people knowledgeable of psychic abilities and ways to counter them. They plan to eradicate the ferals and eventually set up a base there for further raids.

(Is there someone organizing it I could talk to?)

(The woman you saw in the hangar was organizing it but there are a few soldiers from the temple who are going you could talk to as well. The free merchant has the double capacity fitting so 12 people can go)

Aila approaches the high ranking woman at the hanger organizing the raid and greets her appropriately. “I’m interested in the raid mission. I typically hate flying, but through space sounds like too good an opportunity to pass up”

She looks you up and down skeptically, "And what do you have to offer to the team? We're expecting heavy resistance and I'm not sure someone with your... constitution would be appropriate."

“Perhaps I can’t take as many hits as I used to, but that doesn’t matter if you don’t get hit. Plus, I’m one of the few more mystically inclined in the order. I have experience, lots of it, and I’m strategic.” (edited)

"Experience can be useful... especially your mystic experience as these ferals' abilities are a bit unknown." She studies you a moment longer before her sunguard counterpart approaches and stands next to her and starts to take his armor off. "We need to test that you won't be a liability in combat. Fight Hendricks here, you're free to use his weapons if you do not have yours with you. He'll be unarmed and unarmored of course. Do well enough and you may come."

(Uh oh.) “Very well, sounds fair to me. And I’ll happily use weapons. Never say no to an advantage.” She readies one of her blades in each hand, taking a simple and calm defensive stance. “I’ll try not to hurt him too badly.” Aila grins to herself.

The blade misses, the heat of it singeing his hair as he strikes again, his fists once again off their mark. (10/miss)

(Well it’s because it’s less than or equal to 20, so I just got creative since I don’t have that sign and made it less than 21)

She spins out of the way and swings the other blade at him. (14/3, same shock) (edited)

A thin red line appears on his chest where the blade barely struck him, the heat of it cauterizing the wound instantly. He retorts with a kick at your stomach. (7/miss these rolls are terrible lol)

(7/5, same shock) After the first blade hits, she tries to land an attack with the second. She slips out of the way of his kick in the process, throwing off her accuracy.

Your strike falls short and he rushes in with a quick jab to your shoulder. (20/2)

It lands hard, catching her as she misses her own attack. She gets her teeth and swings with her other arm at him. (11/4, same shock)

As your blade cuts across his bicep you see his fist rushing towards your face then everything goes dark. You wake just a moment later, a pulse of energy from the sunguard healing your wounds. (Healed to full for 1 strain) The nexi watches you with her piercing eyes. "Surprisingly nimble elder. You may come with us. We've room for one personal attendant if you've one you favor. Meet us here tomorrow at sunset."

Aila blinks hard, clearing her head. “Thank you. Both for the compliment and the acceptance. I’ll be here by here before sunset, with an attendant. I’ll look forward to working by you.” Without further ado, she takes her leave back to her quarters on the fifth floor from the top.

You arrive back at your room just as the sun is rising, finding it very clean though your flowers haven't been replaced yet.

(Seems like he’s already been here in his thread. Is it reasonable to say I wanna wait for him to show up?)

Thinking on what Isolda said about people sleeping during the day. Wes carefully takes the newly arranged plants to Alia's door then gently knocks on it before averting his eyes downward. (edited)

Aila answers, opening the door. “Felt you coming before you hit this floor. Come on in”

Wes enters and puts the plants down, then turns to Alia. "Sorry I took so long, but no one told me about the poisonous razor kelp in the bottom of the river."

“No worries. Better to have something done right, which you did. Thank you for bringing these.” She sits on the bed and waits for him to finish with be flower.

Wes bows once he finishes with the flower. "Just don't touch the kelp. I guess I'll let you get to sleep then? Do you need anything else before I go? I hope the room was cleaned to your standards, I polished your armor. "

“It is to my standards, thank you, and I take nothing but the best. I will be leaving for a while tomorrow, so it’s good to know I’m leaving a clean room behind. It’s a mission through space to another planet, though I’m sure that’s nothing special to you. That said, if a slave wanted to find their way onto this in hopes of escape, we leave at sunset and said slave or slaves would have to figure a way on “

“I have a big old gear bag I have no need for. My armor only slows me down”

The bag looks to be just barely large enough, though it would certainly be very uncomfortable to be in for long.

"Which ship do you leave on? I should probably know if I'm going to help you load your equipment." (Does Alia's armor seem like it would fit Wes even if uncomfortably?) (edited)

“The free merchant. Alongside a crew of 10 and a personal assistant.” (Aila doesn’t use it because her natural ac is basically equivalent to using it. I don’t know why it wouldn’t fit, but again, Grupp’s call)

She’s not just gonna give him the ticket.) “No saying when people will be up, especially in space with no sun to declare it. A slave wild likely be noticed, so you’d have to be careful. You’re welcome to use my armor if need be, might help you slip past someone not paying close attention. I have a few in mind I might invite as my attendant. A boy I’m hoping to train more, or another slave whose helped me a lot in the past.”

"Do you know when everyone on this floor wakes up though? Muriel doesn't seem like the type to endure quietly if she missed her breakfast, and she already has it out for Isolda. Sorry, I don't know if I could get the answers I need speaking in potentialities, and I trust you, even if I haven't figured out the answer to what you asked me last time. I was thinking to hide in your bag or something else being brought aboard, but I wasn't sure how I'd get Isolda out. I didn't want to leave her here working the floor alone. Do you know what else will be put on the ship? or when the temple goes off of lockdown?" (Muriel is your Xenophobic mean old lady neighbor across the hall.) (edited)

“Ah so you met Isolda then. Unfortunately, I’ve no idea what time that bitch Muriel wakes up, though I figure she likes to sleep in, since I rarely see her out early. It goes off lockdown about sunset.” (Assuming some stuff there so correct me if I’m wrong or out of line) “I’m sure there’ll be some supplies brought along. Maybe she can show away with that. You should try to find these things out, and I will also see what I can do, then we’ll meet back up before sunset tomorrow and finalize a plan.”

Wes looks down and sighs. "Do you like any others besides the apprentice you mentioned? Specifically those on this floor or guarding the ships. If we don't plan on coming back until we're ready to fight. I wondered if the best way of making sure no one raised the alarm was making sure they weren't capable. That might be dangerous or implicate you, and I don't know how I feel about killing old people in their sleep." He pauses looking further down after mentioning the plan. "I think I could deal with it. If it helps get her out though. I don't think she'd survive long here in our caste, at least not as the person she is now." (edited)

(It's not a literal lockdown, there are airlock type things if someone needs to go outside during the day, they're just not often used. But yeah, the normal doors open at sunset)

“I would not be against it, though I’d rather do it without killing, if possible. Isolda has some technical skills, right? Maybe we could jam doors? Or, stealing the ship is still an option. You should talk to her, perhaps she has some ideas of her own. For all we know, she’s already going as some other warriors’ attendant. In the mean time, I will try to find out more about ways to potentially sneak someone on. “

Wes looks back up. "I'm sorry I mentioned it. I just didn't want my personal morals to hold us back, we'll only get one chance at this. So, do you know how nasty that sun is? I thought I would go around during they day, but I might have to say I was ordered to. I don't think slaves are allowed to roam free."

(Up to you, like I said before this is your character intro mission. I was thinking maybe steal a couple, it's not like they are going to not call the guards from the other one if we go in swinging. We could always just let them touch your new plant though.)

(Ok, I slept on it, and I think we’re just gonna steal one. I think it’d be easier, since then we’d be calling shots and trying to fit whoever into the plan wouldn’t be nearly as difficult. More people is better in this case.)

Aila and Wes discuss for a bit and Aila comes up with a new plan. They split to get to work on it, with about a day and a half before the free merchant leaves.

(I'll let Alia post the final version here since I'm trying to mainly make suggestions. I think we're pretty close to having our plan though.)

(Alright, lets do this one last time. I, and hopefully Ben as my assistant, join the free merchants mission to the academy ruins with the other sunblades. Shortly after we leave, Wes and his team (TBD who, probably Isolda and some others) steak a shuttle and follow us there. They land nearby where we did, abandon the shuttle, while I encourage the other guards and them on the free merchant to go check it out. The sneak around to the free merchant meanwhile and we take it, getting rid of whoever else stayed behind.)

Wes leaves your room, eager to prepare for his part of the plan. You're left alone with your new plants, one a pretty set of wildflowers, the other a toxic bit of kelp with serrated edges.

They’re two plants that have learned to survive in vastly different ways. I like that. I leave my room and set off to figure out where I can find Ben. I’d like for him to be my personal attendant on this mission.

You find Ben in the initiate rec room, reading a book in the corner. A few other initiates are around but most of them are in bed by this time of morning.

Aila finds a chair to sit in on the other side of the room, not wanting to disturb him. She notes his difference from the other initiates, choosing to go to bed. Narrowing her eyes, she tries to see what he’s reading, and follows his expression.

He looks deep in thought and the book appears to be a dense text on proper meditation to aid in the prayer and worship of the Almighty Xerkis. Filled with lots of religous propaganda, it also has some solid advice on actual meditation.

She sits a little longer before speaking up. “Not the most thrilling read, is it. Somewhat slow for my taste. Has some good advice though.”

He looks up, startled. "Oh, hello elder! I didn't see you there. There's not much on this kind of stuff in our library but I thought I'd try to follow up on what you taught me."

“That’s good. Your dedication reminds me of how you used to be, and being excited to learn is always a positive. So, what’ve you learned then?”

"Er, well. It's a bit of a slow read and I kinda just started it. Haven't learned anything you hadn't already told me."

“I’ll take that as a ‘I did a great job’, rather than ‘the book is terrible.” She laughs, amused by her own joke. “I’m planning on joining a mission to another planet called Brizenos. I need a personal attendant and I’d like you to come. It’s a rare opportunity and you could do some training too.”

His mouth drops open as he sputters to reply. "Wha. You. Me. I. But. You want me to come with you to another planet? Why me? I mean, yes absolutely! But why?"

“Primarily, to carry my bags. But also because I’d rather give you a chance to go to space than someone it won’t benefit. I’m glad to hear you’re in”

"Oh yes, I'll carry your bags really good elder don't you worry about that! When do we leave?"

“Tomorrow at sunset. You can meet me at my room and then we’ll head to the hanger and board the free merchant. Sound good?”

"Tomorrow sunset, got it. I better head to bed then and get some rest. Thanks elder!"

“My pleasure. See you then.” Aila heads back to her room for the rest of the night, sleeping in the next morning.

You wake to a gentle knock and Isolda comes in with a hearty breakfast for you, placing it on your desk quietly, she hasn't noticed that she woke you.

(Sounds like Wes wants to meet up with Aila before she leaves, so I’ll stall a bit) Aila waits for her to finish before leaving. Then, she finishes her breakfast before grabbing her staff and heading to one of the training rooms to practice.

The larger training rooms are full of initiates and monks alike, running drills and sparring. Grizzled veterans yell at youths and muscular young men and women lift weights. There's lots of grunting and sweating and yelling and cursing all combining in a familiar cacophony.

Aila takes some time to meditate in a corner first, focusing on her energy and feeling her weapon. Then, she stands and makes a few laps jogging around the training area. She's not as fast as some of the others, but keeps a steady pace. Right after, she heads to the weights and lifts for a while.

Your fitness routine has kept you in very good shape for your age and you work up a mild sweat by the time you're done. No one approaches or bothers you while you work out, though you get a few surprised looks from some of the initiates. Most of the other elders don't bother staying in shape, choosing to relax in their semi-retirement.

Once she’s finished up, she makes her way back to the room and opens the door at the knock and sees Wes.

Behind Wes you see another slave with very pale skin, a complex net of white tattoos barely visible cover his body.

"Good Morning Elder Alia, I have the extra plants you wanted is it alright if I bring them in? This kind off world gentleman helped me bring them up, I never got his name." (edited)

Wes walks in and puts the vases down then waits for the door to be closed behind him.

Wes turns to the tattooed man. "So what is your name? If you don't mind me asking." (sorry I didn't realize that you guys were waiting on me I didn't mean to slow things down.)

The man is clearly uncomfortable with this strange situation, but remains silent in the presence of the elder.

"It's alright you can talk, and Elder Alia sometimes gets offended if you don't address her directly and look her in the eyes when you speak with her , standing order. Sorry, I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable it took me a little getting used to as well."

He bows his head in submission, waiting for orders to beat or kill you for speaking without permission.

Wes sighs then moves closer to Alia and also bows . "Well he's more broken than I thought. I'd still like to help him but can only think of a few options we knock him out and tie him up and gag him and one of us probably me takes him with me to be deprogrammed later, you try ordering him to tie himself up, or you let him kill me sort of catch and release and in an hour we go on maybe a little inconvenient, or some fourth better plan you think of?"

Aila thinks a moment. “You seem to know him better than I do, little as that may be. I’ve yet to see a reason to distrust him. I’ll leave the call to you. Wes nods still bowing. "Thank you for the honor Elder, sorry if I took liberties in assuming your previous orders were still in effect, I meant no disrespect. You know I'm new and I've already had to get a few beatings to help with my big mouth." He makes a show of going to the floor, and keeping his eyes averted, but takes a quick look over to the man with tattoos to see how he reacts. (edited)

He's still very confused, but looks slightly more at ease with the permission. He still seems reticent to talk to Wes in front of Aila though.

Wes rights himself then addresses the man. "I know you're eager to get back to work, but I want to help you for the help you gave me. It's ok to talk. She's nice." Wes points at Alia, and tries to smile disarmingly. (edited)

"Nothing too pressing or needing privacy, just I wanted to make sure I understood you right about taking care of your armor, and bringing your plants on your trip?"

“I see. I have little need for my armor, so I do not plan on bringing it, but I might if I have space. I’m also bringing the plant. I would like to have something homey around when I’m in the void of darkness.”

Wes bows. "I will bring it for you then, I will see you when you leave if not before. Is it alright if I come back before then to prepare your things for departure?" (edited)

She makes her way over and opens the door.

Ben is standing there with an eager smile, a small pack of his own belongings on his back. "Am I too early?"

(I think the only thing I might do before sunset when Alia leaves is make sure the armor isn't in the bag so it could be used, the other stuff can come after.)

“To be early is to be on time. To be on time is to be late. Ready to go?” She hands him the bags for him to take, and they start heading down to the hanger.

(Did you want me to show up ready with the plants downstairs, I don't want to be absent, but didn't want to mess with you and your apprentices time?)

Wes shows up a little late and out of breath. His eyes are averted, and he doesn't speak though when he notices the young boy with Alia.

“Good morning Wesley. Notice, Ben, that late is also late, and not just on time,” she says with a grin.

Wes nods, but keeps his eyes averted and doesn't speak to Alia, looking unsure of himself he points at the door.

Ben ignores Wes as most do to slaves, "Late and on time are both late, got it. And early is on time. So what if someone tells you to show up early? Just show up really early?"

Wes bows and goes into the room then comes back holding the two plants he brought for Alia the first day.

“See, you’re already figuring things out Ben.” She leads the way down to the hanger to board the ship.

Wes follows quietly behind her and Ben.

(Wes are you going all the way to the hangar to see her off? Not sure what you're planning to do before this happens but I don't want you doing too much here because it limits what either of us can do since you're not wanting to skip)

The operator turns as you stumble and seems convinced by your stunt. You get a very brief glimpse of the control board which actually looks fairly standard and you should be able to operate it with your piloting experience.

Aila rolls her eyes at Wes's efforts and performance. While he gets his view of the console, she looks around at the other passengers. (anything else you need from the ride Wes?)

There are currently no other passengers as it's quite early in the evening and travel to and from the temple is seldom.

Once they arrive, Aila leads the way into the hanger and towards the free merchant.

The area around the free merchant is busy with soldiers and slaves loading and preparing the ship. The nexi and her sunguard watch the preparations impassively. You notice two other sunblades of your order are going with you, evidently arriving the night before and staying nearby during the day. They're old enough to have a few scars, but not so old that you'd know them well. Likewise they opted for young squires as their attendants instead of slaves and you see one stick out their tongue at Ben as you approach. It seems the rest of the space on the ship will be taken up by normal soldiers.

Wes follows looking at the other ships security and hanger doors to see if they're the same as the subway secured from the inside? (edited)

The other ships each have two soldiers guarding them. You're not anywhere near any doors to outside, but the ones up from the subway didn't seem to have any particular fortifications or anything.

Aila makes sure her bags and gear are loaded. Without further ado, she and Ben board the free merchant and prepare for liftoff.

Wes makes sure the plants are stowed safely in her cabin and gives one final bow to her and Ben before leaving.

Loaded with four soldiers, three sunblades, three squires, and the nexi and sunblade the free merchant takes off into the night sky and out into the vastness of space. (2 days of travel, any RP or downtime stuff you wanting to do?)

(Some general combat training with Ben. Not sure if that’s something I should rp or not, but feel like that would be good)

(You can RP it as much or little as you want. It won't increase his stats at all right now, but if you're wanting to we can get him set up as your unique npc under the new npc rules)

Stat line for him will be martial human since he's trained in combat at an elite temple even though he's young. He'll bump to lvl 2 when you hit 5 and you can pick one sunblade skill for him to learn. He doesn't have a sunblade weapon yet, but if he gets one at some point he'll generally get the same benefits a PC would from it)

(Alright. Let's do Sunblade Mystic, giving the sunblade skill, then rolling 3d6 under growth. Got 2, 4, and 6. Will apply those to WIS, DEX, and program, respectively. Give the 14 attribute to INT, and gets martial human)

(Sounds good to me) You train some with Ben, though there's not much room in the free merchant for combat, and you get a better feel of his skills. He's not untalented at combat, but his keen and eager mind is where he really shines. He basks in your personal attention, something he hasn't really had before. By the end of the trip he's utterly devoted to you as your pupil.

Aila takes pride in him as she gets a better gauge on his skill. As for combat, that can always be improved. It’s a learned skill. She enjoys the view and waits for them to arrive once the training is done.

You leave spike and appear over a new planet. Only one moon orbits, glowing a faint green in the light of the sun. The free merchant begins its descent towards what looks like a small settlement, though many of the buildings look partially destroyed or at least in disrepair. The other passengers begin preparing for the raid.

(Would Ben be able to wear my armor? Or would it be way to big?)

(Cool) Aila and Ben prepare for landing, gathering their gear and watching as they come in towards the planet. Aila watches intently with fascination at seeing a world from this angle, and in person.

You land in a sea of tall grasses, just north of the settlement. It's strange to see so much plant life growing out in the open. Even stranger, it's daytime and nothing's burning. In fact it's only slightly brighter than the plethora of moons you're used to. Everyone gathers just outside, the grass rippling gently in the breeze. The nexi stands before the group, "Everyone understands our goal: to neutralize all of these so-called ferals and seize this settlement as an outpost for further raids. Our intel suggests they're very dangerous but also crazy. They shouldn't be using any sort of group tactics so use that to your advantage. We've got a few collars that we've been told will negate the abilities of these ferals as well, I'll make sure each group has at least one. Any questions?"

Aila doesn't ask any questions or make any comments, casually shaking her head as the nexi asks. She takes in the sunlight, the grass, and the breeze of the planet. The difference is a pleasant change. She keeps her eyes open, scanning the landscape and landing area for anything that might mean an advantage in escape. (edited)

No slaves came with the group so it doesn't seem like anyone is currently alert for someone to run. The tall grass surrounding you would be easy to hide in but just as easy to get lost in with no real map of this world. There will likely be opportunities within the settlement to escape but again, you have no transport or any idea of where the next nearest settlement might be.

Not intending on trying to escape quite yet and just trying to remain watchful, Aila turns her attention back to the Nexi, and waits for further plans and instruction.

"We'll split into two groups. You and you," she points to you and one of the other sunblades, "Take two soldiers with you and your squires the rest come with me. We'll take the right, you go left. Kill anyone you find, they'd be worthless as slaves."

Aila affirms (idk if that’s the right word but whatever) the command, and looks over at the other sunblade she’ll be working with. Once ready, she moves with the group towards the left, like ordered. To the side, she says to Ben, “Try to keep to the back of the fighting. Use your mind and your eyes. It’s important to know where one’s strengths lie”

The other sunblade is a burly man in his late twenties, his squire a hardy looking girl a few years older than Ben. "How do I stay at the back of the fighting with these?" He holds up his twin daggers, "I guess I can throw them, but I can't call them back to me like you guys can."

“Well, unless you’d like to fight in close quarters, options are limited. We’ve brought people who know what they’re doing in combat, so let them hold the front line.” (Basically just trying to convince him to keep more out of harms way since he probably can’t hit anything yet anyways)

"Ah, 'where my strengths lie' got it. I'll just watch your back then." The other sunblade comes over to you and gives a shallow bow, "Elder. As our seniormost warrior our group is at your command."

(Alright, so just gonna work our way too to bottom along the east side) Aila nods in response to the other sunblade. She leads the group to the first, small building surrounded in part by trees. She tries to look in from the outside before going in, but if there are no openings, she’ll move straight in herself, leading the way, and remaining watchful.

The building seems to have once been a greenhouse of sorts, overgrown weeds and vines twine their way through the shattered windows you look through. Sprinklers and irrigation systems long defunct line the walls and ceiling. Small berries and colorful flowers grow on some of the plants but it seems most of what was grown intentionally has been taken over by a thick web of ivy. You don't see anyone inside currently.

I have the group turn around and move forward, with nothing to see here. We work out way towards the next building with a middle courtyard, continuing a systematic sweep.

As you exit the trees and look across the broad campus, you see a number of these so-called ferals. Some are walking about, a few are just standing staring into space. Not too far away two claw and bite at each other, fighting viciously though you're not sure what over. The building ahead of you is in ruins, the ceiling totally collapsed around the courtyard. You notice a feral hiding near some rubble, looking back towards the others suspiciously while it eats something as quickly as it can.

(I probably already knew this and forgot, but is there any goal to this mission besides just “kill a bunch of ferals?)

As she watches it all, she figures they have time on their hands, as the ferals don't seem to be an immediate threat. She looks around to see if she can see the other half of the group at the moment.

You see across the way the other group about to enter a building. It looks like they've already seen some combat, but none of them look wounded. (Entering the northern building of the triangle to the west)

She waits for the other group to enter the building, before turning to the other sunblade and one of the soldiers. “Go take care of the two fighting each other, then meet us at the next building.” She then starts to lead the rest of her group forward to the next, larger U-shaped building. (Interested to know more about this one ⬇️

In the center of the U you see a cluster of four ferals walking together towards one of the buildings. They don't seem to have noticed you.

Aila turns to her group and says they’re going to engage the ferals. “We’ll try to surprise them and take them quick.”

They nod and ready their weapons, waiting for the order. (Execution or surprise round?)

(5 for them) They sprint at you, snarling. One tries to claw at the soldier but his unarmed attacks do nothing against the soldier's armor. The other lunges at you, biting wildly, but your deceptively nimble body easily evades it. (You're up)

Aila swings one of her blades at the biter, moments after dodging its attack. (10/4, 3 shock)

(You can roll for all your peeps too, -2 for Ben and the girl, +5 for the soldier if he's bursting. D6 for the melee kids d10 for soldier)

(16/2 and 7/3 for the kids, and 11/6 for the soldier. Soldier attacks the other and each of the kids attack different ones)

(Oh forgot, soldier can't fire his rifle in melee so I'll say he backs up and takes the attack of opportunity before attacking)

The soldier and the girl take out their feral, blood flowing as the young girl's dagger rakes across his throat. Your own strike lands true, but Ben's thrown dagger is off mark and fails to finish him off.

The biting feral pauses, and you see his wounds reknit as his flesh heals. (You're up)

All four attack the last feral, trying to finish it off despite its healing. (10/7 Aila, 14/6 Ben, 10/1 girl, 12/7 soldier)

The feral falls easily beneath your combined onslaught, just as the soldier you sent away earlier returns, sprinting and out of breath. "Enemy sniper. Must be one of these ferals, he was teleporting all around, I don't know where he went. He killed Craig!"

"I don't know much about teleporting and stuff but he was kinda blurry and far away so I didnt get a great look. You're the mystic expert, I figured you might have a better idea. Should we warn the others?"

(Would it be too meta to send the soldiers to warn the others and then say that the ship is unguarded and go check that?)

(I mean, you know the ship was unguarded so if you think Aila would be concerned about that that's fine)

(Cool) Aila addresses the two soldiers. “The ship is also unguarded, and if he takes that, we’ll be stranded. You two hurry to go and warn the others. We’ll go watch the ship and make sure he doesn’t find it.” (edited)

"Yes mam, right away." The two soldiers take off towards the building the others entered and the squires line up behind you to head towards the ship.

You and the squires sprint out of the academy grounds back towards the ship. As you reach it you can tell it's currently running and preparing for takeoff, though you don't know enough about flying to know how much longer before it's ready.

She and the squires continue around and onto the ship as quick as possible, not knowing what to expect from whoever is stealing it. She takes advantage of her greater familiarity with the ship to navigate through it quickly.

You approach and watch the bulkhead close just before you get to it. Apparently whoever is inside is aware of your presence.

(Alright, well I guess we’re not getting in then. Wes gave me contact info for the guards on planet. Would I be able to use that to get away? Can’t exactly just start walking and it seems like the ship isn’t an option, since I didn’t roll high enough)

(You rolled high enough he hasn't taken off yet, you could try some different things to get in or you could contact whoever Wes gave you. You're just in range of the Plainsford network)

(Ok) Aila and the others go back around to the front of the ship. She waves her arm in the air, trying to get the thief’s attention. She lays down her blades in a sign of non-threat. (edited)

Rey notices them, fearing a trap he checks the sensors and seeing no one in the ship. Teleports 10m outside the door to the cockpit and seeing no one reaches into his pack and pulls out his second compad. He grabs it with TK and sends it out the airlock. Then teleports back in and sends this message to it. I have your ship, play nice and we may even take you back to your planet. Who are you.

Aila, after a moments hesitation, takes the compad and, standing in such a way that the two squires cannot see it, responds.

We’re from Extaurren, a planet nearby. It’s dominated by a dark sunblade order, that I no longer wish to be a part of.

Ben stands faithfully beside you, confused by the interaction. The girl glares at the ship, openly hostile at the one who killed her tutor.

Aila turns to the squires again. “Our enemy may have misjudged us. We will board and talk to him.”

She scowls and crosses her arms but gives a shallow nod. "I will survive for his vengeance."

Aila puts a hand on her shoulder and thanks her. “Alright let’s go” She leads them around to the cargo hatch.

The door closes behind you and the ships rumbles, finally ready to take off.

Aila and the squires wait patiently for the their to emerge.

The flight is fairly quick in the free merchant and Rey touches down at the airstrip on the outskirts of New Astria. Rey sees a small military detachment gathered around the hangar with general Kline leading them.

Rey teleports out next to general Kline and his soldiers as the doors begin to open. Aila and the squires are met by a small force of armed soldiers, rifles held at the ready but not aiming at you.

Kline looks to Rey, "I'm not sure how you managed to steal a spike-capable ship and capture three potential turncoats, but you've done a damn good job Rey. As of now I'm putting you in charge of AID, you'll report directly to me."

“Thank you sir, before I start dealing with that let’s figure out if these turncoats are authentic or just a plant.” Rey prepares to fire as the ramp lowers.

Aila watches as a tall thin man approaches with a bushy gray mustache perched beneath a bulbous nose. Unlike the rest of the soldiers he seems unarmed. "You there, come forward slowly." He gestures towards the soldiers, "I'm sure you understand why this is necessary. If you all cooperate there's no need for violence."

Aila nods and steps forward. “I’d prefer that. What can I do?”

"Well we'll need some sort of assurance that you're not going to betray us in turn. We'll hold on to your grandchildren for a moment while you come with us to answer some questions alright? They won't be harmed of course, that's not how we do things here. You'll be reunited with them once we're finished."

Ben smiles, unsure but trusting. Regina continues to scowl, but doesn't seem like she'll try to stab anyone. The soldiers escort you to a nearby hangar where it seems someone's office has been converted to a makeshift interrogation room. The mustachioed man goes in with you, leaving his soldiers just outside the door.

Aila finds her spot and takes a seat. She keeps vigilant, trying to read the strange mustache man.

He's clearly a military man of much experience, likely a similar age to yourself or perhaps a bit younger. He's thin but not frail and he studies you with eyes weary but not unkind behind a pair of thick lensed glasses. "I am General Kline of New Astria. If I'm not mistaken you're not from around here."

"That would be correct. We are from a planet called Etxaurren. We don't have the means for intergalactic travel typically, but our order stole ships capable of strike drive."

"Etxaurren, interesting. Do you know who they stole the ships from?"

(I don’t believe Aila was ever told that directly. Would she know?)

“I’m afraid not. I never inquired because it wasn’t my place.”

(Probably feminism Ben and Reginas fighting role at the academy ruins. Not sure where exactly they stand on killing ferals, but I like to think Aila’s the kind of person who’s happy to face consequences herself. )

"You've been surprisingly forthcoming Ms. Reoch. You'll be under light surveillance, but I believe we can let you go for now. It is likely we will have further conflicts against your people in the future, would you be willing to aid us against them?"

“I would rather not, though I will be willing if I am called to do so. It feels good to be free of the order. I’ve been planning an escape for a long time.” She starts getting up to leave. “Oh, and there was a young man named Wesley Milgram. I don’t know if you have data on him, but he was captured by my people as a slave, and I have reason to believe he’s been killed.”

"The name's vaguely familiar, there was a report on a few people whom were captured. I'll make sure to let someone know, if he had anyone close. Of course you won't be compelled to fight against your people, but your running and what you've given us today could make you a target so they may not give you a choice. Anyway, we have housing available if you need it, for your squires as well. Let me know if there's anything you need."

“I will face the situation should it arrive General. As for housing, we thankfully accept. Though, if you or one of your men would kindly direct us or give us a ride, that would be appreciated. We’re somewhat new in town after all.” She stands and grins.

He returns the smile and opens the door for you, "Of course, I'll assign someone as your guide. Your cooperation will be remembered Ms. Reoch, feel free to stop by if you need something."

"Thank you." She follows him out and meets up with the squires once again, preparing to board a ride out. "I'm sure you both have plenty of questions. Ask me anything you like." (Just making sure, but she definitely would've told the general about the group still there at the ruins)

Ben looks up at you, wide eyed--a little scared but mostly curious. "What's going on elder? Are we captives?"

“No, we are not. We’re defecting. It took me a long to learn it and take action, but the order is a vile place, full of corruption. As squires, they put a limit on your true potential in order to serve those surrounding a man made god they’ve created and marketed as a savior. They’re lessons are lies, and us victims and fools. Their power is stolen from people like us who gave it to them. I will not force either of you to come with me, but should you choose not to, you will face the consequences alone. I hope you understand.”

They both stare at you open mouthed, half expecting Xerkis himself to appear and smite you. Ben swallows, then nods. "I'll follow you elder, though it may take me a while to wrap my head around all this." Regina doesn't speak, just standing in shock, still raw from the grief and rage from earlier.

“You will not regret it Ben.” She turns back to Regina, giving it a few moments before talking again. “I apologize for forcing you into this Regina.”

"Traitors. We're all traitors. When they conquer this planet we'll be tortured and executed for this. I should go back and report you and explain it wasn't my fault then maybe they'll let me live as a slave."

“But therein lies the truth Regina. Search the fire of your heart. You have a strong sense of justice. Is it justice that they would make you a slave though you did nothing wrong and were unknowingly brought along?”

She thinks hard for a moment, brow furrowed in concentration as she doubts her entire world. "But... At least I could still serve Almighty Xerkis as a slave. Better that than die a heretic. It's my fault I didn't try to kill that feral who shot my master."

“It’s not your fault Regina. He was a fighter, and he made his choice. Death is a natural part of life. As those still living, its our responsibility to learn from both, and be better for it. In other words, not its your turn to make a choice.”

She's silent for a moment, deep in thought before sighing, "Fine. You're right. I'll follow you for now. At least until we have a better idea of this new planet we've defected to."

“I’m glad to hear it. You’re free to do as you wish, should you decide to split from us.” As they arrive at their destination, Aila heads out to check out the provided housing situation.

You're led to a line of small hut-like houses, though the one your escort takes you to is slightly bigger. Inside is only a single room with a queen-sized bed and a set of bunk beds. A dresser and night stand complete the furnishings, simple but well built. It smells of fresh wood, you're likely its first occupants. Your escort is a young woman, her military uniform neat and tidy. Her long brown hair is pulled into a bun and though her face is serious her eyes are kind. "There's a bathhouse and cafeteria down that way. My name is Lucinda. I've been assigned to help you find your way around the city, if you have any questions I'll be nearby."

“Thank you for your assistance. We shall alert you should we need anything further.” “This will do for now, until I can get some place of my own set up.” After a few days of settling in, Aila starts to turn her attention outwards. She finds a planetwide map and tries to form a short list of some of the ruins or similar abandoned places. (not a big investment in ruin exploring, but can’t exactly just go right to forming an order lol)

You're able to get a map, though it seems most of the world has yet to be thoroughly explored. The ruin you landed next to was the old psychic academy. Besides that there is a massive city across the sea, apparently in worse condition than the academy and much more dangerous. Asking around you discover before the scream it was forbidden to settle or even disturb the world around these two settlements due to an agreement with the natives of the planet's moon.
